A lot of conferences, exchanges, and dialogues for the protection of Navajoland enhance more than a cause but a universal knowledge. New meeting places, new economical ressources, new communication networks are here to make the real possible.
The Navajo Nation is still ready to confirm its existence on this international level, larger than the United States territories, and its function of link and connection to protect Tradition and Mother Earth.
Feet and sacred lands
The Navajo delegation by its 9 members and the Navajo France Association participated for the second time to the festival of the « People of the Deserts of the World » in December 2006 at Algiers, capital of Algeria, on this African continent where we can find the largest desert in the world that is, Sahara.
Besides Algeria, which organised this event with Italy, everybody was nearly present : Native Australians, Nomads from Mongolia, Egyptians from Sinaïd, Navajo from United States, Tuaregs from Africa.
In the labyrinth of Algiers, a high and powerful colored patchwork have pavaded for two weeks. A great diversity of People, cultures, civilizations, have represented the deserts of Africa, Asia, America and Australia.
Path and foundation
On conclusion of the International conferences on desertification, the 22nd of december, Algeria proposes the next decade, 2010-2020, to be devoted by the UN to the desert and struggle against desertification. The twenty five countries and Arabian Ministers of Environment approve this proposition.
« We are going to present this program to the General Assembly of UN », President of Algeria said. « Within ten years, he adds, the men, possibilities, capacities, valuations, allow to perpetuate and sanctify the desertification topic ».
A group of experts representing the different gathered countries have also suggested to change the political vision in order to avoid desertification which threads 200 million of people barren areas. They proposed to look for innovating options to guaranty human, financial, technological and institutional ressources and get a stronger financial mobilisation to stop desertification.
At this time two draft agreements have been ratified. The first one has been signed by the Ministery of Environement and an experts panel representing the international institutions and the second by the Institutes of desertic areas of Tunisia and China and the University of Tokyo.
For Mr Rahmani, new sorts of conflicts are emerging concerning natural ressources. Deserts constitute a real
stake and our societies are facing a challenge of durability, foundation of any mankind destiny politics. For him 2006 is « the year of strong awareness ».
It appears that to succeed in any attempt in struggling against desertification seems to require the whole society commitment.
Let’s remind representatives of different european environment foundation (PNUD, PNUE), Canadian Agency for development of the International Coorporation, Convention of Nations for struggle against desertification, Arabian Center, Sahara-Sahel Observatory were present at the Algiers conference.
Our meeting with President of Algeria, Sir Abdelaziz Bouteflika, has been one of the official subjects and the new key topic for the Navajo Nation involvment even for the other Native American Tribes in regards to future international meetings which will occur next following years.
President of Algeria quoted as following : « Navajo Nation musn’t cut itself from all new future conferences for protection of the World Heritage.
This festival is a witness thanks to the presence of all the Navajo Nation members and will remain roosted in everybody’s memory. In this way I am specially greatful to everyone for having been so generously involved.
Protection of cultures and civilizations as well as preservation of natural areas in the world as universal heritage remain a topical subject. This is very close to what present tells us and Arizona desert, widely open, still wants to live on a way where men, women and children stand upright.
